Anti-Bullying Specialist and Coordinator Training

As part of our continuing mission to support the education community in their efforts to prevent bullying and keep children safe, the Ceceilyn Miller Institute for Leadership and Diversity in America (CMI) and the Center for Applies Psychology at Rutgers University is proud to offer a two-day training program for district bullying prevention coordinators and school anti-bullying specialists, new positions required by the 2011 NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights.

The Anti-Bullying training program will help educators further understand the requirements of the new law and the steps that need to be taken in order to keep students safe. In addition to raising awareness and providing information about bullying, the training will focus on evidence-based strategies and solutions for bullying, the role law enforcement plays in schools, and guidelines for putting together a comprehensive anti-bullying program in their school. The two-day training program will focus on five essential content areas for district anti-bullying coordinators, school anti-bullying specialists and school safety team members. Those areas include the following:

Cluster 1: An Overview of Bullying and Bullying Prevention

Focusing on the role bullying plays in our schools, this training session will educate district anti-bullying coordinators and school anti-bullying specialists about the myths and facts of bullying, and will help them to differentiate teasing from bullying and tattling from reporting. The training will also focus on identifying bullying behaviors, as well as the roles played by targets and bystanders. Additionally, participants will learn about some of the newest bullying issues, including cyber bullying, sexting, and hazing.

Cluster 2: Review of the 2011 NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights

In this workshop participants will deepen their knowledge of New Jersey's Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights. Under the new law, school administrators will be required to respond to instances of harassment, intimidation and bullying in a timely and effective manner. The law creates school safety teams that will involve a cross section of the school and give ownership of the problem of bullying to the entire school community. Additionally, the law requires schools and districts to provide annual reports of bullying episodes districts, to be passed up directly to the Commissioner of Education, which in turn will grade each school's handling of bullying, harassment and intimidation.

Cluster 3: Best Practices in Bullying Prevention

This workshop will provide participants with ten concrete strategies that have been identified as "best practices" in bullying prevention and interventions. Additionally the workshop will include recommendations from other successful bullying prevention efforts. With this information schools will be able to identify the various approaches that are presently working across the country and identify the model(s) that may best serve their students.

Cluster 4: Bullying Prevention and Law Enforcement

The workshop will clarify the role that law enforcement plays in bullying prevention efforts in schools. The new law requires the reporting of bullying incidents and provides clear guidelines to identify when bullying becomes a public safety issue. Additionally, participants will learn how to conduct investigations, utilize School Resource Officers and law enforcement personnel as agents of positive change in their schools.

Cluster 5: How to Create a Comprehensive Bullying Program

Research clearly shows that the key to preventing bullying, and creating lasting, positive change in school climate, is to get everyone in the school community involved in building a competent, caring community. In this workshop, participants will learn about all the essential pieces required for schools to effectively address bullying and promote a positive, accepting school climate. The training culminates with this workshop, which ties together all the prior sessions. CMI staff will walk participants through a step-by-step process of designing a program that encompasses the whole school and the surrounding community.
